Panel Discussion
Reflections on the New York City Downtown Art Scene
Christine Berry, Ann Walsh, and James Walsh in conversation with Curator Karen Wilkin
KinoSaito was pleased to present this panel discussion, featuring two accomplished artists, a gallerist, and curator - all of whom were instrumental figures in the coming together of our current exhibition, Kikuo Saito and Friends: New York City Downtown and Beyond, 1970s and 1980s. Christine Berry is co-owner of Berry Campbell Gallery which has operated for a decade focusing on post-war American artists including Dan Christensen, James Walsh, and Larry Zox. Ann Walsh is an artist who now primarily works with paint, plexiglass, and vinyl. James Walsh, an artist who became an active member in the New York Art scene in the 1980s, follows in the modernist tradition of Pollock and others. Karen Wilkin, in addition to curating our current exhibition, has organized numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally on modern painters and sculptors, including Stuart Davis, Anthony Caro, David Smith, Hans Hofmann, Milton Avery, Judith Rothschild, and Helen Frankenthaler.
